If your system is booting really slowly or locking up, use step one.
If you system is locking up at the windows login or desktop, use
step two.
Step 1: Changing the scan command in Autoexec.bat
Click on the START button and select 'Run' and then type 'SYSEDIT'
(Without the quotations) and click 'OK'. When the System Editor window
is open, you will see several windows, select the C:\Autoexec.bat
window in the front. In the Autoexec window, look for the following line:
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scan.exe c:\
Change this line to one of the following:
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scanPM.exe c:\
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scan86.exe c:\
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\bootscan.exe c:\
Exit Sysedit and Save your changes when prompted. Now you can
Restart your computer. Everything should be fixed at this point. If not,
try one of the other scan lines listed above.
Step 2: Moving VShield to the Startup Group
Note: This step is not necessary unless you are locking up at the
Windows login screen or at the desktop.
[Registry]
Note: You must back up the current Registry files (user.dat &
system.dat) before you edit the registry.
Click on the Start button and choose 'Run'
Type: "regedit" (without the quotations)
Click the plus next to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
Click the plus next to 'Software'
Click the plus next to 'Microsoft'
Click the plus next to 'Windows'
Click the plus next to 'Current Version'
Click the folder titled 'Run'
Delete the value 'VSHWIN32EXE'
Delete the value 'VSSTAT.EXE'
Delete the value 'McAfee WebscanX'
Click the folder titled 'Run Services'
Delete the value 'VSHWIN32EXE'
Delete the value 'VSSTAT.EXE'
Delete the value 'McAfee WebscanX'
Close the Registry Editor window
[Setting Files]
Open 'My Computer' on your desktop
Goto C:
Goto Program Files
Goto Network Associates
Goto McAfee VirusScan
Look for DEFAULT.VSH and DEFAULT.VSC
Write protect both of these
[Adding to Startup]
(While still in the Virus Scan directory)
Look for VSHWIN32.EXE
Right click on this file and choose 'Copy'
Close the My Computer window
Right click on the start button and choose 'Explore'
(This should automatically start at the Start Menu folder)
Double Click on 'Programs'
Double Click on 'StartUp'
Hold down the Ctrl (Control) key and press V
This should paste the VSHWIN32 shortcut
Reboot your computer
