In last week`s FAX Alert, we reported that action on the McCain-Feingold/Shays-Meehan campaign finance "reform" bills (S. 27 and H.R. 2356, respectively) would occur "in the very near future." Well, the future is here, as the House is set to begin debate on H.R. 2356 next week. Please contact your U.S. Representative once again at (202) 225-3121, and urge him to oppose H.R. 2356. For those on the Internet, you can also find contact information by using the "Write Your Reps" feature at NRAILA.org. Be sure to tell your Representatives that we hold all of the Constitution to be inviolate -- including the First and the Second Amendments!

A LOOK AT THE STATES

ARIZONA: Earlier this week, SB 1128, the anti-gun show bill, and SB 1174, mandatory storage legislation, were held up in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Both bills lacked sufficient number of votes to pass, and they should not be seen for the rest of the 2002 session. Thank you to all members who contacted their lawmakers in opposition to these bills!

COLORADO: HJR 1006, a resolution proclaiming a Legislative Sportsmen`s Caucus, was approved by the full Senate on Monday, February 4. HJR 1006 now goes to the Governor for approval. Contact the primary sponsors, Rep. Tim Fritz (R-51) at (303)866-2947 and Senator Stephanie Takis (D-25) at (303) 866-4865, to thank them for their effort. In addition, SB 60, the NRA-backed "Uniform Concealed Carry Act," is expected to be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee next week. If you wish to turn out and support this bill, call Senate Information at (303) 866-3521 for the time and location ofthe hearing.

ILLINOIS: A village council hearing is expected to take place Monday, February 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Palatine. Mayor Daley has taken his anti-gun agenda on the road attempting to pass Chicago-style gun restrictions village by village. Please call your village council member and Mayor Rita Mullins (D) at (847) 358-7500 and urge them to oppose any gun restrictions in Palatine.

MISSISSIPPI: The House Judiciary B Committee reported out HB 764, a bill by Rep. Warner McBride (D-10) that seeks to repeal a long-standing state requirement that federally-licensed firearms dealers maintain a registry of all ammunition sales. The full House will consider the measure next week. Please contact your State Representative at (601) 359-3770 and urge him to support HB 764.

MISSOURI: Right to Carry legislation is again being considered this session. SB 938, Senator John Cauthorn`s (R-18) bill, will be heard by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, February 12, at 12:45 p.m. Rep. Frank Barnitz`s (D-150) HB 1729 should be heard by the Special Committee on Sportsmanship, Safety and Firearms (time and date TBA call the House information line at (573) 751-3659 to find out the schedule). Plan to turn out for these hearings and show your support for Right to Carry.

NEW MEXICO: This week, the full House approved HB 112, an NRA-supported shooting range protection bill introduced by Rep. Larry Larranaga (R-27). The bill will receive Senate committee assignments this weekend. Please contact your State Senators at (505) 986-4600 and urge them to support HB 112.

SOUTH DAKOTA: Earlier today, the Senate State Affairs Committee unanimously approved HB 1129, which seeks to establish reciprocal agreements to allow Right to Carry permit holders from other states to lawfully carry firearms concealed in South Dakota, and vice versa. Special thanks to Attorney General Mark Barnett (R), who has been instrumental in helping to clear the hurdles to ensure passage of this measure. HB 1129 has already been approved by the full House and only the approval of the full Senate remains. Call your state senator at (605) 773-3821 and urge him to vote for HB 1129.

VIRGINIA: HB604, which seeks to expedite the process of out-of-state Right to Carry permit recognition, passed the House Militia, Police, and Public Safety Committee today. This bill is expected to come to the House floor as soon as tomorrow. Call your Delegate at (804) 698-1500 and urge him to support HB604.

WISCONSIN: State Representative Scott Suder, Chairman of the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee, will hold Right to Carry hearings next week. The first will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 12, at the State of Wisconsin-National Guard Armory in Eau Claire. The second will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Waukesha. If you have questions or comments regarding these hearings, contact Rep. Suder`s committee at (888) 534-0069, or e-mail him at rep.suder@legis.state.wi.us. Assembly Bill 675 and Senate Bill 357, both of which seek to allow law-abiding citizens to be licensed to carry a concealed weapon, will be discussed at both public hearings. Please attend.
